Introduction to Procurement

What is this workshop about?

Increasingly organisations require their staff to have competence in and awareness of good procurement practice. This basic course offers an overview of the procurement process from invitation to tender to contract closure.

As a result of attending this workshop, delegates will be able to:

  • Appreciate what good procurement is and why it is increasing important to organisations
  • Understand how their role fits into the procurement process
  • Understand the basic steps of procurement and contracting
  • Understand the impact of EU procurement rules
  • Appreciate the importance of managing contracts after they have been awarded
  • Understand the importance of good close down arrangements

Who will benefit from this workshop?

This workshop is especially suitable for all those staff involved in delegated procurement activity that have little or no previous training to support their procurement activities.

  • The basic 'rights' of procurement
  • The procurement 'process flow'
  • The procurement 'drivers' for the business

Stage 1: Pre-award

  • When and why to purchase or contract
  • Product market and supplier knowledge
  • Introduction to specification and development writing
  • Supplier sourcing and selection

Stage 2: Award

  • Negotiation, quotations and competitive tendering
  • EU procurement - an overview
  • Bid evaluation and award of contract
  • Legal issues and conditions of contract

Stage 3: Post-award

  • Contract management and change controls
  • Service delivery and performance management
  • Closure planning
  • Disposals and closedown

Workshop exercises

  • Application of the 5 rights
  • Understanding basic legal terms
  • Simple negotiation exercise
  • Dealing with price variation requests

Workshop Trainer

Bryan Jones - Associate Training Consultant: Bryan is a supply chain career professional with experience in manufacturing industry, local government, health service supplies and professional training. He set up Supply Chain Projects in 1996 which undertakes a range of consultancy and training projects in the UK and overseas. Brian has a BA and is a Corporate Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, and the Institute of Logistics and Transport.

John Oliver - Associate Training Consultant: John is a career Supply Chain Professional with over 30 years experience in purchasing, contracts management and supply chain development. In recent years he has been an associate of Supply Chain Projects and has undertaken two key roles:
- Preparation of course material, trainers notes and delegate packs
- Course delivery associate with SME's and corporate organisations

John has a BSc and is a Corporate Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.
