PfH Annual Conference proves that sustainability doesn't have to cost more.

Sustainability and efficiency. They can co-exist. More than that, sustainability has a vital role to play in hitting efficiency targets. This was the message from PfH's third Annual Conference.

Leading figures from the world of regeneration, sustainable development and housing gathered at Birmingham's ICC to debate how social landlords can integrate sustainability with efficiency into their procurement strategies.

Over 200 delegates, 14 speakers and 39 exhibitors were challenged to act now on sustainability. All of the event's expert speakers agreed that the sector could have no more excuses.

Keynote speaker and Chair of English Partnerships, Robert Napier, said landlords and developers should not use the downturn in the housing market as an excuse for building substandard homes. He went on to say that sustainable development may have higher upfront costs but, at the same time, there will be lower running costs. It requires the sector to be ahead of the game and build houses that people want to buy and rent.

Erik Bichard, Professor of Regeneration and Sustainable Development at Salford University closed the Conference. He told delegates that short-termism, the natural but unwarranted resistance to change and the failure to perceive whole life considerations of our built realm, were as much human failings as they are policy or market failings.

The conference established PfH as the chief driver for sustainable and efficient procurement within the sector.

Feedback from delegates and exhibiting suppliers was very positive. Housing professionals were pleased to have a forum where they could meet suppliers face to face, get answers to their queries and find out more about the teams behind each contractor.

The Conference acted as a springboard for the next six months of growth for the consortium. Many of the issues discussed will contribute to the next wave of agreements to be launched later this year.
