Dementia Knowledge Day, Wednesday 14th July 2010, LOROS Hospice.

7th June, 2010

With the recent focus on the need for Registered Providers to be better educated about caring for people at the end of their life, PfH is delighted to invite Members to a Dementia Knowledge Day hosted by PfH’s sister organisation IHP.  The Dementia Knowledge Day will be taking place on Wednesday 14th July 2010, LOROS Hospice, Leicester.

A recent study, from older people’s housing specialist Housing 21, said some providers were reluctant to discuss or deal with the subject with tenants approaching death.  It said the management of pain in people with dementia is especially poor with some families and professionals mistakenly believing that people with dementia do not feel pain. Care providers followed a variety of practices when caring for people with dementia, including illegal activities such as crushing tablets, which confused family carers.

It found some landlords felt their accommodation was not suitable for palliative care because they only had one bedroom, were in high-rise flats or might not easily be adapted to the tenant’s requirements. They also said their staff were not properly trained to handle people dying.

The report is an evaluation of a dementia nursing pilot in Westminster run by Housing 21.  The two-year pilot run by Housing 21’s Dementia Voice Nurse service provides care to people with dementia at the end of their lives.

PfH invites you to join our panel of experts and other Members to discuss improving the care provision to deliver best-practice dementia care. In particular, PfH welcomes Morejoy Saineti from Dementia Voice Nurse, Housing 21, amongst others who will be advocating a joined up approach to delivering dementia care.

Speakers at the Knowledge Day include:

  • Morejoy Saineti, Dementia Voice Nurse, Housing 21.

  • Dave Bell, Outreach and Support Worker, Alzheimer's Society

  • Professor Jane Gilliard, National Dementia Strategy Programme Manager, Department of Health.
