Waste not, want not.

5th November, 2009

New waste legislation and changes in taxation mean that housing providers without a waste management strategy could face big bills, risk criminal charges or even jail sentences. PfH nominated waste management suppliers have been active in helping the social housing sector to develop effective waste management strategies.

Prior to the launch of the PfH waste agreement, Office Depot invited Erimus Housing to take part in the PfH pilot programme. The pilot revealed that five out of the six pilot Members needed a Waste Carriage License. Office Depot took the opportunity to help Erimus put an effective waste strategy in place which included the implementation of confidential waste policy, a complimentary service for the collection of plastic bottles and aluminium cans and a pre-segregation service.

Similarly, Greenstar has helped the social housing repairs and maintenance provider Mears' to benefit from maximum flexibility of service through extensive auditing and planning of each site, but with the implementation of a common recycling concept nationally.

Both Erimus and Mears have achieved full legislative compliance. In turn this is helping them make major reductions to their environmental impact, with Mears increasing its recycling rate to 75%, and importantly saving hard cash.

To find out more about how your organisation can benefit from the waste management agreement , PfH will be hosting a dedicated sub-plenary session entitled ‘Waste not, want not' at the Annual Conference 2009 which will discuss the issues surrounding waste management and the implications of not supporting legislation. Throughout the breaks delegates will have time to catch up with all three of the PfH suppliers Greenstar, Office Depot Environmental Solutions and Anyjunk Ltd. who will be present at the PfH Exhibition.
