Avoid rising costs and meet green targets with new PfH agreement
7th July, 2009
New waste legislation and changes in taxation mean that housing providers without a waste management strategy could face big bills, risk criminal charges or even jail sentences.
To combat these risks, PfH has launched a new Waste Management agreement, helping housing organisations plan efficiently for waste legislation, make long-term savings and reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill.
Significantly, a pilot of the agreement last year revealed that five of the six pilot Members needed a Waste Carriage License. The pilot enabled participating Members to put waste strategies in place including void clearances and office recycling, covering general, hazardous and clinical waste. This in turn helped them make major reductions to their environmental impact and also save hard cash.
Following a highly competitive tender, the Waste Management contract was awarded to three suppliers: Greenstar Environment Ltd, Office Depot Environmental Solutions and Anyjunk Limited.
The agreement includes the following features and benefits:
-
Full waste management service including: site audits, waste consultancy and the removal and disposal of waste (including bulky waste).
-
Suppliers can remove and dispose of all types of waste including office, refurbishment, void clearances, fly tipping, clinical and confidential materials in an environmentally responsible a manner.
-
Value added services available through suppliers including: training and information on industry best practice, waste segregation and sustainable systems to minimise, re-use and recycle waste.
-
Management Information and carbon footprint reporting.
-
Suppliers hold membership of Chartered Institution of Wastes Management.
-
On-going contract management and supplier performance monitoring.
-
Helping to achieve corporate social responsibility targets through reduction in landfill.
-
Fully EU tendered agreement.
The contract will help housing providers avoid the major pitfalls of changing waste legislation; taking the WEEE Directive, Duty of Care regulations, Hazardous Waste regulations and the ever increasing costs of Landfill Taxes all into consideration.
Julie Craig, PfH Director said: "We knew that the £100 million spent by PfH Members on over 100 different waste services could be managed much more effectively. Our aim is to show housing providers that with efficient planning and a robust sustainability programme, they can successfully manage this complex and constantly changing area."
"PfH's new Waste Management agreement shows social landlords that they can achieve efficiencies AND dramatically reduce their impact on the environment. Watching your organisation's waste is key to achieving environmental targets and saving money. Our mantra at PfH is ‘being green doesn't have to cost more'."
